The Commission pulls back the curtains for Law Week 2024

The Commission may investigate allegations of corruption (serious misconduct) by public officers using particular powers to obtain information. The Commission may examine a witness and require the production of records. Usually, an examination is conducted in private, and evidence given remains secret. For Law Week, the Commission created a portion of a mock examination of a fictitious public officer.

The Hon. John McKechnie AO, KC presided over the mock examination on Wednesday 15 May 2024, and explained the various roles lawyers play during the course of an investigation and in the examination room to assist the Commission reach an opinion as to whether serious misconduct has occurred.

What is the role of Counsel assisting the Commission? Can a witness be legally represented?
