Hon John Quigley and Commissioner McKechnie

On 27 June 2024, the Corruption and Crime Commission commemorated its 20th Anniversary with a celebration that brought together staff and representatives from the wider community.

The morning began with a warm welcome by Chief Executive Emma Johnson, followed by an opening speech by the Attorney General of Western Australia the Honourable John Quigley MLA.  In his speech the Attorney General highlighted the milestones and challenges faced over the years and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the organisation's success.

Commissioner McKechnie's speech followed, highlighting that corruption was a global problem, with the UN Secretary General estimating the annual cost of international corruption being US 3.6 trillion dollars in bribes and stolen money.  He accentuated how Western Australia had seen a strengthening in corruption controls by changes in legislation and emphasised the importance of an anti-corruption agency.   He concluded his speech by expressing the importance of our combined duty to stand against corruption and misconduct in all its forms.

After his speech, Commissioner McKechnie presented certificates of recognition to several staff members for their dedication and invaluable contribution having worked at the Commission since 2004.

At the conclusion of the formalities, guests enjoyed light refreshments and were treated to a visual journey through time with a photograph montage showcasing moments from the past 20 years.

The 20th Anniversary celebration was not just a reflection of the Commission's past achievements, but also a hopeful glance towards the future.  With continued support and dedication, the Commission looks forward to many more successful years to come.
